Click here to visit several locations originally created in Second Life and OpenSim on your web browser. You don't need an SL/OS client to view them, and though they use Unity 3D to display, now you don't even need to download a Unity plug-in, because the latest version of Flash (standard to nearly all web browsers) has Unity's display code built in. This is the latest, nearly consumer-ready version of technology created by Tipodean, from ex-Linden Chris Collins, with the help of SL/RL architect Jon "Keystone" Brouchoud, which I wrote about earlier this month. Now the demo comes with a menu and many locations to select from. The one you're looking at above is a web-accessible version of NOAA, which was originally developed in Second Life for the US government branch. As I noted this week, OpenSim is not apparently growing its userbase. Unity, however, has been growing by leaps and bounds, with a user base in the tens of millions. So if OpenSim (and for that matter SL) wants to grow beyond the smaller market for client-based installs, something like what Tipodean is doing with Unity probably a fruitful way to go.

Related to this, Tipodean also just launched the Archtech Engine, which uses Unity to generate web-based 3D spaces with avatars -- and can do so with SL and OpenSim locations. Chris and Jon and I recently hung out in an early, military-themed demo, see below:

There has been so much action going on out there on Nightingale Isle. We are working on several projects at once and are hoping to get students out and about by the beginning of November.

Here is a picture of the new Three Musketeers - partners in crime: Zelda, Tessa and Paix. This is one of many planning meetings. There is always a flight of ideas when this crew gets together. :)

Over the last three years I’ve planned, designed, and orchestrated a dozen learning events in the virtual world of Second Life. I’ve been fortunate enough to work with extremely experienced and talented programmers, producers, content experts, scripters, and machinima artists from whom I have learned volumes about planning and staging successful learning events. As I reflect on these experiences, I’ve drawn up a list of the top eleven — ten seemed so predictable — most important lessons I’ve learned.

1. Prepare them just enough — and no more
As with most virtual worlds, Second Life is chock-a-block full of intriguing possibilities. You can fly, build, photograph, gesture, control the time of day! In addition to all that, the interface is rich and complex and there is always more than one way to accomplish any task. So it’s tempting, when first introducing someone to a virtual world, to show them everything – or to show them just one more really cool skill as it might be the tipping point to infect them with your own enthusiasm. However, I have finally learned to resist that temptation. Most people can’t absorb tons of information in one sitting. I know that I didn’t – why should I expect that others will? Plus, there’s another reason. When the event is over, the attendees will look back at the experience and if the preparation session for the event was more intensive than the learning they received from the event itself, they will consider the event a failure.Today, our pre-event training regimes include only those skills the learners will need in order to participate in the event and no more.

2. Set learning goals upfront and use them as a filter

In the early planning stages, work with your content experts and the program sponsor to establish a short and well-defined list of learning goals. What is it that you want your learners to exit the program knowing? That list will serve the team well in many ways. It will drive decisions about how to spend money — will that fun simulation help you meet the learning goals? — clarify how to allocate time on the agenda, and serve as a filter when the inevitable “mission creep” begins.

3. Make sure your back up plan has a backup plan

The old saying really is true, if it can go wrong, it will. I have seen so many “unexpected” problems crop up in every event I’ve been a part of – sound problems, connectivity hassles, access issues, electrical problems, region shut-downs, you name it. It seems obvious, but the very best way to avoid these inevitable glitches ruining your event is to anticipate them and have a plan in place to address each one. For example, it’s good to have phone numbers or Skype IDs for all learner participants — if they have sound problems, you can always Skype them in.

4. The power of two facilitators

Our learning events always include a content expert who has worked with us to develop the session’s content and then, typically, serve the lecturer or facilitator role. But we now recommend two
facilitators. Hopefully you can line up colleagues who are used to working together, but it can work equally well with experts who you bring together for the cause. Why two? It’s helpful for the learner to hear two perspectives, two voices and it improves the event’s flow to hand-off one to the other. And, just as importantly, while one is speaking or leading, the other can monitor local chat, provide feedback, and address content questions that arise. If the instructional design calls for small group work, then you instantly have two small group leaders — voila! They also serve as back-ups for each other — if one is having sound problems, the other can pinch hit.

5. Measure twice, cut once

That age-old seamstress mantra totally applies to virtual learning events. There is just no substitute for rehearsals where you go through your program to work out all the kinks. Run your facilitators, producers, and other program staff through at least one full rehearsal, preferably two. If the calendar doesn’t permit time for two full rehearsals, then opt for a “blocking” rehearsal. That is, rehearse all the transitions, without the intervening content — that is, practice the parts when people come on, go off, and all the movements and changes.

6. Answer the question ‘Why are we doing this in a virtual world?’ — before it gets asked

No doubt about it, conducting learning events in virtual worlds — any virtual world — is a lot of work for the sponsor, the producers, and for the learners. So it only makes sense to use virtual world technology if you are making use of its unique affordances. That is, if you are doing things that can only be done in a virtual world. If you bring your learners into a beautiful virtual environment and then talk at them with a PowerPoint deck for an hour, everyone will leave feeling cheated. Instead, make it work for you. Devise a simulation, do some role playing, leverage some whimsy, do some collaborative building, defy the laws of physics – make it clear why you have all gone to the trouble to be there. In a smoking cessation workshop, we had a rain of cigarettes - it was the physical answer to the question of how many cigarettes a pack-a-day smoker smokes in a year. (Image by Robin Heyden.)

7. Experienced technical support producers are essential

In addition to your upfront investment in learner training, participants will need technical support on the day of the event. Count on it. The presence of experienced, calm, and professional technical support — we call them “producers” — is a must. Did I say “calm”? Let me say it again. Calm. My preferred ratio is one producer for every eight new learners. Make sure you have a private back-chat channel open, such as instant messaging, group chat, or Skype, for the producers to strategize, share, and hand-off among themselves. Consider asking the learners to come 15-20 minutes early in order to troubleshoot any pesky technical issues before the event gets underway — not all will be able to, but those who do will be taken care of, freeing your producers to focus on the just-on-time or late arrivals. Have your producers wear a “Ask Me for Tech Help” label on their avatar.

8. Consider venue design carefully

After playing with a number of event location design options, I’ve gravitated to the simplest possible. Our events typically have outdoor seating — no doorways to navigate, no walls to bump into, and no ceilings to hinder the view — with very large and simple visuals to avoid view problems. I tend toward natural-looking scenes — a few trees, open sky, and a blue-water view — with very little visual clutter. But, of course, you also want the design to reflect and support the content of your event. Design your seating with automatic sit upon clicking and encourage all participants to be seated as soon as they arrive, which helps to calm things down. Landscape simplicity also helps to keep the prim count low to reduce the processing load. Our continuing medical education session was held in an open-air venue - no walls or ceilings. 9. Document everything as you go

I am continually amazed by how quickly I forget useful things. Who attended? What was the plan? How much did we rehearse? How long did it take? What happened in local chat? Keep a record of it all, including a blog post or two — like this one! — to sum up your major take-home lessons. You’ll be glad you did when the planning for the next event begins.

10. Don’t forget to assess

It is important to find a way to build evaluation into your learning plan. Often, we get so caught up in the work of producing the event, we forget to gather feedback from the learners when it’s over. Even if it’s just a short questionnaire, provided as a link, at the end of the session, find a way for your learners to tell you honestly what worked — and didn’t work — for them. You might also consider gathering similar feedback from the facilitators and producers. They often catch glitches that you might miss.

11. Find a way to make it fun

One of the things we all love about virtual worlds is that touch of fantasy about them. Even though it may be important for your event to project a serious and professional tone, your learners are sure to enjoy at least one touch of whimsy somewhere in the program — we typically do this on a break or at the end. It could be something as simple as some virtual food and drink, served up to your guests. Maybe an automatic dance floor for everyone to trip the light fantastic? Fireworks are always fun. And a simple T-shirt emblazoned with your company or program logo, given to each avatar at the end of the session can be a surprising hit. As Tessa and Zelda work on the "Nursing" parts of the Henry and Ertha scenarios, Starlight Harbour, builder and scripter extraordinaire is busy making sets and props. As you can see from the pictures, there will be parts of a chart (EHR), and also a Pyxis machine. There will be a monitor that can be changed just like in the simulation lab. And the best part, the avatars who play the patients will be in 3D and have a real person's voice.

Tessa and Zelda are back in action

After a long hiatus, Zelda and Tessa are back at it. Moving and shaking and getting the island ready for students to come out and learn. They have cleaned up and are doing some remodeling to the buildings with the help of a few very talented builder/scripters. Now if they could only find some money to pay these individuals that would be great. Hopefully some small grants will come through so the island can be fully functioning.

Meet Henry and Ertha

Here are the first pictures of Henry and Ertha, the National League for Nursing ACES unfolding case avatars. These are the subjects of my National League for Nursing Health Information Technology Scholar Project. For this project we will have two baccalaureate programs and two Associate Degree programs run simulations both in the simulation lab and in the virtual world of Second Life. There will be a group of students from each school who will all run the identical simulations. Then we will compare and contrast metrics.

Overview: Henry Williams is a 80-year-old African American, a retired rail system engineer who lives in a small apartment with his wife Ertha. Henry and Ertha had one son who was killed in the war 10 years ago. They have a daughter-in-law, Betty, who is a nurse, and one grandson, Ty. It has been awhile since I have written! It is not because there has been nothing happening.......but instead because there has been so much happening. Since last I wrote I spent a week out at Johns Hopkins School of Nursing in Baltimore working with colleagues who are all National League for Nursing Health Information Technology Scholars. It was a great week learning about what is new in nursing informatics and education. Then in June I headed out to Orlando for the INACSL conference to present about my DNP project. Once again I spent the week collaborating with many nursing scholars. In other exciting news, a group of colleagues who use Second Life for educational purposes began a group called International Cooperative of Practice (ICop). Through this group I have met a group of colleagues who encompass both nurse educators and technology specialists. There has been rich discussion and interesting information shared. We are working on adding a senior apt and assisted living to the island, and rezzing up the home birthing center. More details and pictures to come. Exciting things are happening. Stay tuned!

Exciting Adventures

This has been a week of new beginnings and exciting adventures! I have begun to work with Wade Schuette, an educator/scholarly person from Michigan. (AKA Starlight Harbour inworld). He has much knowledge of and expertise in building and scripting in virtual worlds! As you all know Zelda can hardly fly so she needs much help (And so does Jone in real life :) Here are a few pictures from some work done on the Reticula sim in Jokaydia. More to come on the projects. Much of the work will be tied to my Health Information Technology Scholar (HITS) project. I am awaiting word on some rental property in Jokaydia Grid. Virtual World Education Round table Discussion

On February 24th I attended the Virtual World Education Round table discussion: Which Grid for Me? Pros and Cons of VW Grids for Teaching. It was really interesting to hear other educators discuss the pros and cons of open and closed grids for teaching. Many of the educators felt educators should have a presence both in the open (Jokaydia Grid, OS Grids etc....) and closed sims such as Second Life. I am contemplating renting space over in Jokaydia Grid as well as out in Second life. Here are some pictures from the round table discussion.

National League for Nurses Health Information Technology Scholar Program (HITS)

For the year 2011, I have been accepted to the National League for Nurses (NLN) Health Information Technology Scholar Program. (HITS). This is a year-long immersive program with the following goals:
     1. Transform teaching and learning in the 21st century – Merge informatics, telehealth, simulation and e- learning to create powerful learning environments.

     2. Improve Nursing Education and Practice – develop faculty to integrate IT in curricula to educate future practitioners.
     3. Expand Infrastructure for clinical Learning Processes – Educate a cadre of well-informed faculty who focus on real-world applications of technologies in their education practices.
     4. Optimize Patient Safety and Drive Improvements in Healthcare Quality – Better educate future workforce with competencies to provide safe, quality and efficient healthcare through use of technologies.

There were: 253 faculty applicants (113 Schools; 36 States) , with 52 faculty accepted from 29 diverse schools in 20 states.   (NLN HITS PPT presentation January 28, 2011). Here are the esteemed Executive Leadership Team:

Society for Simulation in Healthcare International Meeting (SSH IMSH)

It has been awhile since I have blogged. Since last time, I graduated with a Doctor in Nursing Practice from St. Catherine University, and have begun to write up a couple manuscripts for publication.

I spent the last week in New Orleans at the International Meeting for Simulation in healthcare. I presented the avatar project, and there was much participant interest about the project. I also joined the Special interest group (SIG) for serious games for learning. There were over 2400 people in attendance and there were offerings such as Sim Wars, Immersive Sessions, and Serious Games. For starters, Nightingale Isle will be part of the serious games arcade. It will be fun to share information with nurses and physicians who are interested in how to use virtual worlds for educational purposes.

Another great day out in the virtual worlds....... Today, Zelda visited the Jokaydia Grid. I don't have any pictures yet because she needs to spruce up a bit, and add some clothes and hair to make herself presentable. the most exciting thing that happened out there was Zelda got to meet the great Jokay!!! It was great chatting with her. She answered all my questions about Jodaydia grid, and I also got to meet her U.S. manager, Azzura Supplee! Tomorrow, Zelda will get a makeover and then I will post some pictures. I am also working on an application to the HITS scholar program from the National League for Nurses. More to come on that as well.

Where have the last two months gone? I guess writing my final Doctor of Nursing Practice paper has taken more time than I thought it would. I just submitted the final draft, and will defend on November 2nd. In the meantime, I have submitted, and had an abstract accepted for the Society for Simulation In Healthcare International Meeting for Simulation in January. Once I defend, and graduate in December, it will be time to get going on Nightingale Isle. Once I am all finished, I will talk about the results here.

I hope to get some simulations set-up, and give some presentations out there. Zelda attended an interesting meeting today for the Virtual World Education Round Table (VWER) weekly meeting. It was a very interesting hour with Jokay Wollongong from Jokaydia.com. You can join the VWER on facebook. Jokay discussed the recent price hike for educational islands in Second Life, and the importance for educators to have their foot in many of the virtual world environments.

A Game Of Archery, and A Mysterious Disappearance

At 7pm on Sunday evening, several of the students met out on Nightingale Isle. The Avatars were Fadumo, Ned, Susan, and Mildred. Fidelius teleported us to the new Green archery area up in the clouds above Nightingale Isle. I am very impressed with the skills the students have aquired in such a short period of time. A funny thing happened while we were running around in the archery area. Susan clicked on the circle to pick up the bow and arrows, and her clothes and hair disappeared. So, Susan was suddenly without her clothes and hair. Zelda quickly transferred some clothes to her. It gave all of us a good laugh. Nothing is ever normal out in Nightingale Isle. The students have had some very interesting experiences out on Second Life. I can't wait to read about them.

Sightings on Nightingale Isle

Zelda has been out and about in Second Life, and has had some recent sightings of some of the diversity project avatars. She has heard of some of the shenanigans that have taken place with all the newbies floating about. There have been disappearing floors, and an ambulance that ended up in the ocean. When Zelda signed on yesterday, the ambulance was found inside the Emergency Department. :) I am so pleased that the students are trying out their new skills, and will watch carefully for any new stories. Last night Zelda met up with jenice and spent some time with her doing Tai Chi. Also, Javan and Zelda spent some time practicing their dance moves. Javan had an interesting story about his travels on Solace Beach. After an uncomfortable encounter, he teleported quickly back to Nightingale Isle where he found Zelda hanging out. Zelda and Fidelius, the island builder, also met up with Manderson who was out on NI practicing his navigating skills. More stories to come.

Inclusivity in Nursing Education Project launched

On Wednesday May 5th, my Doctor of Nursing Practice Systems Change Project was launched. The study involves 15 - first year Masters of Nursing Education students at St. Catherine University. They were randomly assigned one of a group of diverse avatars that were made and adapted for this project. The students will evaluate the use of this new pedagogy, as well as journal about how they were treated when visiting some of the social sites in the virtual world of Second Life. I have loaded the pictures of the avatars, and will put up the bios later. Each student was provided with a picture and a biography of the individual, and were told to go out in Second Life as the assigned avatar (person). Watch for updates.

For The Love Of Learning!!

What an amazing night in Second Life. The evening started at the birthing center on Kowhai Island. This is an island built by the New Zealand virtual world education group. This group, called the Second Life Education New Zealand (SLENZ), has set up a research project in the on-line virtual world of Second Life. Their aim is for New Zealand educators to pilot at least two projects into determining how multi-user virtual environments (MUVEs) might benefit New Zealand education and how this can best be done.On the island, Zelda met up with Petal Stransky (@SarahStewart), a New Zealand mid-wife, educator. We were also met by Ginseng LeFevre, (@allonsdanser), a librarian from Alabama. The three of us toured around the island and then headed over to Nightingale Isle. The cool thing is that we are all passionate about pursuing innovative strategies to spark learning in students, as well as those in our respective practice disciplines. As Ginseng said in her recent blog entry:
"This is what I love about online Social Media: it fosters passion. Tonite as I was finishing up some school work I saw a tweet in my TweetDeck stream from a midwife in New Zealand who was about to give a tour of her midwife birthing unit in Second Life. It was an open invitation so I immediately teleported there. I met two very smart and passionate nurses who are invested in using SL for teaching nurses and midwives! The tour of the facilities was great, but what I really came away with from that time in SL was a sharing of education passion. Both women were passionate about trying to engage students in the learning process and saw SL as a vehicle for getting there."

This lecture series will include presentations by professionals from medicine, nursing, risk, legal, and other disciplines associated with the delivery of healthcare.

Sorry for the huge lapse in time since the last post. Between life events and the holidays, there has not been time to update this site. But, here we go again. Let me see if I can get us caught up. Since the last post there have been some very exciting things going on over on Nightingale Isle! The Alexander Volz Medical Center is coming along nicely. There is now an Emergency room, OB, Pediatric, isolation, simulation, MRI machine, xray and many many more areas. Also, there is a Cardiac area with its very own Cardiologist, Paty who is from Mexico. YEAH!! Welcome to Paty who now has an office on the third floor of the Medical Center. Fidelius (Alex) and Tessa (Jane), have been hard at work in the medical center, adding equipment to better serve our students. More to come! Check back soon!

Wow, she has been a part of Second Life for a whole year. Thanks to Tessa for introducing her to SL. YEAH

Fidelius decided that all work and no play makes for a boring day. So he and Zelda set out on a fabulous adventure. They stopped at McDonalds for a bite to eat, and then headed over to Mouse Island to go on the Pirates of the Carribean and jungle rides, in addition to a trip through a haunted house, and a ride on a space ship. Paty and her friend Larry joined in on the fun.

Here are pictures of the beautiful furniture built by Manuel, a very important member of the Nightingale Isle group. The library in the Commons area was his brain-child. Last night I fell asleep on the couch while correcting papers. Zelda was sitting on the side of the Zen garden watching Fidelius build. (cheering him on). Well, since I fell asleep, Zelda sat there motionless all night long. Fidelius continued to build the Medical Center all night long. When I woke up in the morning and checked in on Fidelius, this is how Zelda looked. He was laughing very hard when I finally woke up. Tessa was hanging out and looking over the progress of the Medical Center. All three of us had a good laugh about Zelda's night. :) Zelda had a halo that said, "Zelda's halo" and there was a sign there. Fidelius sent the picture to Zelda. hahahahah

He has a HUD that detects any action on the island. WOW!! We showed Emm Dawg around and we practiced using the microphone in the podium and it worked. YEAH!! Here is a picture.

Nightingale Isle is coming together. The new Florence Nightingale Center has an upper floor, and a set of stairs. To the left of the stairs on the upper floor is a door that leads to Zelda's new office. She can have private meetings with students, or meet with groups in there. It has an amazing view of the mountains and the ocean. She even has a new laptop. Check it out if you are out on Nightingale Isle. Here are a few pictures.

Anne Sandalwood, (Sue Forneris), my new advisor, and Zelda visited Nightingale Isle to see how Fidelius was doing with the building. Wow, we found a whole new building called Florence Nightingale Center. It was beautiful. We will be thinking of ways to use this new building. Possibly in the future we will run some simulations in there. Fidelius has been busy building Zen Hill. We will have yoga mats, Tai Chi balls, and meditation area for students to hang out and relax. We may eventually hold relaxation classes out there. While giving Anne a tour, Fidelius decided to turn himself into a large dragon. Anne and Zelda went for a ride on his wings........straight out of Harry Potter. After all, life cannot be all work and no play!!! Take a look at a couple of the new pictures. I am hard at work developing an NCLEX review curriculum for Spring 2010. More to come..............

The Island comes alive

Zelda at the microphone. The screen can be used for powerpoint presentations, and has a loud microphone so all can hear. This will be the place that the Bridge to Practice visiting scholar series will be held.

The island now has a new amphiteater for presentations. The screen has an active podium that has a speaker and a ppt viewer. Now, I have to figure out how to present out there. This space can hold up to 100 avatars for the visiting scholar presentations that will begin later this fall. Thanks to our friend Fidelius Dollinger, there will be a space for students to meet. I will name it the Fideluis amphiteater in his honor. Notice there are two bridges and there is a beautiful waterfall at the end of one of the bridges. Above the amphiteater is another area where students can chill, meditate and discuss.

Wow............next will come a garden with a Nightingale Isle welcome sign and then the work begins on loading reuseable learning objects with floating modules. We may even be running simulations on the island by the end of next spring.

A Visitor to Nightingale Isle

Today, I was working on the island and I received a message from Fidelius Dollinger. I met him in Ann Myers medical center (in Second Life) last winter. He is from Germany and is an amazing young man, and builder. He came to visit Nightingale Isle and thought it looked like a fun place to hang out. He showed me how to do a few things with building, playing music, and changing the dynamics of the island. It was really a fun visit. I will post a picture the next time he comes to visit. I have also begun to collect things to make some avatars for a spring nursing course. It should be a really fun assignment for the students. Fidelius said he would like to help me make the island a fun place for students to learn. YEAH

Zen hill, floating deck and others

The Island is being transformed into a gathering place for nursing students, faculty and visitors. I am currently working on phase one of this project, building meet and greet spaces. There is now a Zen Hill with some yoga cushions, and a water fountain; a floating deck with all sorts of seating areas; and a covered deck with beach chairs.

Now that there are many spots for meeting, I will begin working on phase two of the project, an area for lectures/presentations with seating for up to 100 avatars. This area will be used for the visiting scholar program, and other presentations for nursing students, faculty and visitors. Along with this, there will be some floating modules for students to review materials covered in class and clinical.

Phase three will come later next spring. This will include an NCLEX review area. I have posted some more pictures of what is new on Nightingale Island since the last time I wrote. If you have an avatar, come visit. In not, let me know and I can help you make one. Jone

I know it has been a long time coming......and I apologize for the delay, here is an update on Nightingale Isle. Without boring you with the details, the last month has been a bit complicated, but everything works out the way it is suppose to in the end. My DNP project is back on track, but will undergo some changes. I will explain them in the next post, but for now, here is what is happening with Nightingale Isle:

My friend Spring Inkpen, has made an avatar, and is helping me build some great facilities on the Isle. I have attached some new pictures. The Island has finally been delivered!!! Now, what to do with it? This feels like an overwhelming task and a very steep hill, but we will get there. I am so excited to get started creating/building a space for nursing students_faculty_nurses_patients etc......can gather, share and learn. I have elicited the assistance of my good friends Missy Spiritor and Spring Inkpen for support. They came over on Saturday night, made their avatars and we played for awhile.

I have a few items in my inventory that I pulled out on the island just to see how they would look. This week I will work on a design for the island. I will keep it fairly simple with a garden, main gathering building, some floating modules, an outdoor theater where presentations can take place, and a deck with a fire ring. I want to make sure the island has several places where discussions can take place because this is all about learning and sharing. By next Spring I hope to make some quiz chairs where students can practice for their state board exams. My friend Missy Spiritor has a vision of bringing her patients with MS to this island for some support and fun. We will be looking into making an area/building for these patients as well.

Exciting News From Linden Labs (Jay Linden)

I signed into my email to send a message to Linden Labs to check on the Island and whallllllaaaaaa, there was a message from Jay Linden. Here is what it said:

"Thank you for your order! We have received all of the required information and your order has now been placed in the delivery queue. Watch for your invoice soon."

Now, as I read that message, I wondered how to pronounce queue. hmmmmm. No worries, Sue Forneris aka Anne Sandlewood (in Second Life), was at my house and told me it was pronounced "Q", not query like I thought. I am so glad I have smart friends. Today I had some faculty over to my house, and now have some new recruits for Second Life. Watch for more updates in the Facebook Second Life group.

This journey began back in October, 2008, when I attended a Laerdal conference in Chicago, Ill. I heard about the educational uses of the virtual world of Second Life. I promptly went to my hotel room, made an avatar, and began to think about the possibility of piloting the use of Second Life with nursing students for my DNP system change project.
